Carlsbad resident Mike Ramirez was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in September. Within a month, he and his wife, Maureen, their children, Michael and Colleen, other family members and friends started a foundation to increase awareness, raise money for research and help others who are dealing with the disease. Rancho Santa Fe resident Susan Foster, MSW, is a medical social worker, writer and firefighter advocate. In 2004 she was honored as "Firefighter for Life" by the San Diego Fire Department for her efforts to advocate for the health and safety of firefighters in the wake of an increasing number of cell towers being placed on fire stations by local government.
